Ron Fricke

Baraka 1992 -
Without words, cameras show us the world, with an emphasis not on "where," but on "what's there." It begins with morning, natural landscapes and people at prayer: volcanoes, water falls, veldts, and forests; several hundred monks do a monkey chant. Indigenous peoples apply body paint; whole villages dance. The film moves to destruction of nature via logging, blasting, and strip mining. Images of poverty, rapid urban life, and factories give way to war, concentration camps, and mass graves. Ancient ruins come into view, and then a sacred river where pilgrims bathe and funeral pyres burn. Prayer and nature return. Written by {jhailey@hotmail.com}(imdb)

Chronos 1985 -
The use of quick-motion and time lapse is great and give the film a very nice artistic touch. The electronic score composed by Michael Stearns accompanies the corresponding footage very smooth and nicely and adds to the overall atmosphere. Author: SkyCAM from Cologne, Germany (imdb)

Choosing Documentary for Artefact 2

I have been researching different persuasive documentaries. The documentary director Godfrey Reggio featured regularly in my research creating documentaries that had no conventional plots or narrations and are open to interpretations to the viewers. Ron Fricke was another writer/director that collaboratored with Godfrey Reggio and made some of his own work that used the same style of creating documentaries.

Neon (pronounced /ˈniːɒn/) is the chemical element that has the symbol Ne and atomic number 10. Although a very common element in the universe, it is rare on Earth. A colorless, inert noble gas under standard conditions, neon gives a distinct reddish-orange glow when used in discharge tubes and neon lamps. It is commercially extracted from air, in which it is found in trace amounts. (WIKIPEDIA)

Choosing Documentary for Artefact 2

After collecting and analysing the results from the first artefact I have decided to find another documentary to discuss in focus groups and using questionnaires. This documentary will need to have opposite qualities to the ones i compared in the artefact 1 to find the differences in engagement oppotunities.

Artefact 1 Evaluation

Artefact 1 compares two documentaries and two reality television programmes to find how the use of engagement opportunities that impact on relationships between viewer(s) and subject(s). For the two documentaries, clips taken from The Family and The Lie of the Land, both considered educational. The two reality programmes, clips taken from Big Brother and Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here considered the most entertaining on television. Questionnaires were completed to collect answers and a focus group is used to debate and define certain comparisons.

The comparisons of documentaries showed that through styles of editing impacted viewers in different ways. The use of equipments and editing offered a more natural or more artificial reflection of the subject(s). Connections between characters and viewers can be made through common interests and experiences but even without a common ground, connections can be made when relating to a life or death situations. A narrator provides an important part of the narrative, delivering ethical, informative, and educational information using fact, figures and personal interviews to the viewer(s) creating an attachment to the subject(s). But a documentary’s authenticity is reliant on facts that support the subject matter.

The comparisons of reality television programmes show that viewers are not connected to the characters because there is no previous attachment or relations/experience to their current situations. Viewers consider these programmes entertaining as the characters are taken out of their comfort zone and are able to watch the demise, embarrassment and failure that are exploited and shown through precise selection of in the editing process. The presenter(s) informs the viewer(s) of the progress and give an overview of the next parts of the programme. They are considered to be an important link in bridging the connection between subject(s) and viewer(s) even though the content will always override the presenter(s).

Promises directed by Carlos Bolado and B.Z. Goldberg

Several Jewish and Palestinian children are followed for three years and put in touch with each other, in this alternative look at the Jewish-Palestinian conflict. The three filmmakers followed a group of seven local children between 1995 and 1998. They all have a totally different background. These seven children tell their own story about growing up in Jerusalem. Through this portrait of their generation, we see how deep rooted and almost insoluble the problems of the Middle East have become. When the protagonists speak out in an epilogue a couple of years later, it becomes apparent that all have lost their childlike innocence. Written by Sujit R.
